Humbolt Surf recently has grown to include a healthy lifestyle model to its store called The Best Yet, adding healthier product solutions to accent Humbolt’s surfing lifestyle apparel line.
Located at 1299 Kapiolani Blvd. (the corner of Kapiolani Boulevard and Piikoi Street), Humbolt Surf opened in 2011 as a showroom for surfing lifestyle clothing designed by local screen printer Carlos Alcivar. The name of the store comes from Alcivar’s favorite childhood surf break in Chile, Humboldt Bay, but written in the way he used to misspell it.
“The store is unlike any other you have seen,” says partner Matthew Kievlan. “With its entrepreneurship laboratory model, all employees are part-owners. The honest, unassuming pineapple shirt in the window Be YOUniQ, taken from a baby pineapple grown in Cat Sullivan-Haskins’ Kaimuki backyard, reminds us all to pursue our unique dreams. You’ll love Humbolt’s relaxed island themes and tasty açaí bowls — made from an Amazon super fruit high in natural antioxidants, available for order while you shop.

Humbolt Surf and The Best Yet also regularly host community events at the store. The next event is Saturday, Feb. 14 at 9 a.m., featuring a Valentine’s Day Chocolate Run/Walk with dark chocolate sampling along the way. At the finish line, each participant will take home a cucumber pickle starter in a mason jar, complete with easy-to-follow instructions for pickling when it’s grown. “The purpose of the plant is both to remind us to water the ones we love, and to subtly promote organic home gardening — an essential part of the island’s food supply,” explains Kievlan.
